I saw in the Veggie project today that there really are genuinely good people and kids in rough situations trying to change that and make the best of their surroundings. This idea of allowing the children to help "run" the market and play a large role in the profit is life-changing for someone in that particular situation. Not only that, but it also promotes business learning and a healthy diet, something which has become a growing problem, especially in an urban community such as that. I feel that this program gives the young students strength and confidence in themselves and what they believe is right.
While I had to leave before the Veggie Project trip, the idea of community oriented initiatives is exciting. I am a huge fan of WORKABLE, VIABLE, and SUCCESSFUL projects in society. The general inequality in the world is nothing more than a result of chaotic chance, but a community can right what has been "dealt" to them with concentrated efforts. A strong fibrous backing of people involved is needed before any progress can be made...hard to come by...
For me, the big take-away was the idea of enpowerment. The project as a whole is much more effective because they do not simply go in and give food away. The way they are doing it now provides a market for local farmers, a safe environment to kids who can learn business practices, and a market to neighbors looking to eat healthy.
From what I saw, the childrean really enjoyed being at the Veggie Project. The more children can be exposed to healthy options, the more likely it is they will mention it to their parents and so on. Also, the children are really hands on. They don't stand there and watch as adults do all the work. The people working it encouraged the children to directly participate in exchanges and customer service.
The Veggie Project is an inspiring and influential program that is working to relieve the lack of nutrition in Nashville's neighborhoods. the project brings together local children and teaches them the importance of hard work and dedication. The children ran the veggie market on their own which revealed their sense on pride in their work. I believe that this program has the potential to forever change these childrens' lives with the skills that they are attaining from teamwork.
The Veggie Project is a very unique and powerful way to, not only bring fresh produce to inner-city areas, but also to empower adolescents to take on responsibilities and to develop leadership skills. It is also an influential way to plant seeds of the importance of a healthy lifestyle in these young people's lives.
I really sensed teamwork and community today while working with the Veggie Project. I thought it was great how many kids helped out, and they really seemed to enjoy what they were doing. I think it is a great way to teach kids about health and nutrition because it is interactive and the kids are in charge. I think the kids are empowered because they are given responsibility.
I saw today that it only takes a group of dedicated kids to change a neighborhood from the inside out for the better. It was truly inspiring to see the local kids work together to sell healthy food to people driving/ walking by and having fun while doing it.
I think this is definitely a useful way to teach about health and nutrition because it is more effective than sitting kids down and lecturing them about health and nutrition. This hands-on experience puts a lasting influence on these kids, and they can even walk away with some marketing skills in the process.
I projects such as this one gives opportunities for children to work with people and learning to work together for a greater good. They learn to communicate and I'm sure when they're older, they will be able to lead a project of their own is they wanted to because of their experiences with Veggie market.
1. empowerment. support. encouragement. community. teamwork. enthusiasm. perseverance. i love volunteering because i love to see people come together and build a relationship around a common goal; i always find myself inspired by the ways in which each individual grows into his/her role to try to improve the overall condition of the community.
2. the involvement that is expected of the children makes the lesson of health and nutrition more tangible. it is easier to teach when the students have a real understanding of the tasks that they face (in this case, learning about and helping to lessen the impacts of childhood obesity).
3. a hands-on project such as the veggie market requires much participation from the children involved, which brings about a sense of emancipation and empowerment for the children (knowing that they play such a large role in the success of their market).
While we were on the Veggie Project trip, I noticed, as many others have, an incredible sense of community and empowerment. It was refreshing to see so many people come out and support the project, most of whom had been there before. I also saw that the actual produce selling was teaching some of the kids about business and health at the same time. This program not only encourages the kids to participate in their community but it also gives them confidence in the choices they make.
My biggest take away from the Veggie Project was that anyone can change the community and work to promote a better society--even in a small area no matter your income, etc.
I do think the Veggie project is a good way to teach kids about health and nutrition.
Young students are empowered to learn business skills and get a sense of accomplishment of being a part of a bigger picture and a bigger situation. This can empower them to do anything.
The Veggie Project really demonstrated that there are many people who do want fresh fruits and vegetables in that area of town and that depend on the Veggie Project.
The project is an excellent hands-on way of teaching the kids working there about nutrition.
The thing that distinguished the project was that it truly empowered its participants. Not only do they share the work load, but they share the benefits. They are always doing something that extends their practical education of advertising, business, etc. It also teaches them to save because most of their profits go towards college funds, while they still get a little spending cash.
I will never forget how polite many of the kids were. They were willing to work and I heard several saying yes mam to the coordinators. I was a little surprised by this and by their normalcy. I think I was afraid the older ones might be a little rough but they were all well-behaved. Yes I really do believe that the Veggie Project teaches them to eat healthy foods and will hopefully provide them with the skills they need to become successful adults. These students are selling the produce primarily to members of their own community and I think they will be able to feel and see the changes they are making. They will see that can sell things and they can advertise.
The Veggie Project is a great opportunity for kids in food "deserts" to learn not only about health but also about how to manage a business and aspects included. It was great to see their "marketing" by using large poster boards, and they were truly involved with the customers in the sales. Im sure having volunteers there was helpful, yet they did not need us. Each section of the market was placed in the hands of a kid and having that responsibility was enough to keep them going.
I think the biggest take away was realizing that there are people that can't effectively get to a grocery store and that we need to help them. I suppose I have always taken for granted that I could drive 5 minutes to kroger (or publix now) and buy cherries or carrots.
I think that this program really helps the kids that work there to gain a sense of community and leadership.
My biggest take away was definitely the children who worked really hard to sell their fruits and such. This idea of children selling vegetables ad fruits really gives them an insight on health and how eating healthy is very beneficial. This program definitely keeps the kids working and eating healthy.
