TB Clinic

1. How common is TB here and worldwide? Did the statistics suprise you?
2. What makes our TB center one of the top places in the world for getting TB treatment?
3. What did you learn about TB coninfection with HIV?
4. Just like in the ED, it takes a whole team of people to care for TB patients - did this suprise you?

Before going to the TB clinic today I didn't really understand what TB was and how you got it. So, I felt very informed afterwards! TB is the main killer of people with HIV because their immune systems cannot tolerate and fight of illnesses.

It impressed me that TB affects 1/3 of people (or something like that, but I guess that includes latent TB) which is pretty surprising since I've never heard of anyone I know with TB. And only 2 people died in Nashville from it in the past several years so I guess the treatment here must be working pretty well. :)

1. 1/3 of the world's population is affected by TB (as Rohini stated) - that's pretty mind-boggling. Here in the U.S. TB thankfully isn't that common due to the healthcare outreach and medicine advancements.

2. Quality care and the right treatment make our TB clinic the place to go to.

3. TB is a serious illness that can ultimately lead to one's death. The effects it can have on a person are drastically negative and these effects cannot be taken lightly. Therefore, more than one person is needed to combat this illness.

I don't really remember the specific stats, but I do know that TB is less common in the US than it is in other countries. Because TB is so easily spread, it is a disease that requires urgent care, and many different facets of care, so a lot of different people are needed to help cure or maintain someone with it.

before I went to the TB clinic i didn't really know HOW common it is. I also didn't realize how much commitment and time it takes to cure a TB patient. I was also surprised to know that TB is the number one killer of AIDS patients, not actually the HIV virus.
